It is important to distinguish a Yoga Teacher from a Yoga Instructor.
A Yoga Instructor is someone who simply provides or explains instructions about how to do asana or exercise. Mostly an instructor will stand in front during much of the class and demonstrate the asanas for students to follow. An instructor is more concerned with what to do and how to do it, and will follow a set pattern, a sequence or instructions.
A Yoga Teacher, though, delivers bespoke tailored classes that respond to the particular student's needs and abilities. The Yoga Teacher is concerned with helping the student meet his or her personal goals through the yoga class. A teacher is attentive and responsive to the student's restrictions, needs and emotions.
As a teacher I honour and respect all differences, and always remember that this moment I am teaching my yoga student yoga, but tomorrow he or she might be my teacher in another discipline. Humbleness, truly caring for the students and integrity are the three qualities I mostly admire and remember fondly from my time as a student.
